The Open Door of IPC
The Open Door, a ministry of Independent Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), seeks to provide meaningful opportunities for residents of Kingston and North Avondale to access services that will assist them in achieving their goals of education, employment, family stability, and enrichment for adults and children, leading to increased hope for a future in which individuals and families can flourish.
This ministry is made possible through the generous collaboration of JCCEO and partnerships with other organizations with expertise in areas of service provision. Our current partners include The Literacy Council of Alabama and Jefferson State Community College.
Currently, we provide the following programs:
- Adult Basic Literacy: Tutors will work one-on-one with individuals to help them improve their reading skills. Literacy tutoring is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00AM-12:00PM. This program is coordinated through The Literacy Council of Central Alabama.
- English As a Second Language (ESL): ESL will provide tutoring to help individuals improve their English-speaking skills. ESL is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00AM-11:00AM. This program is coordinated through The Literacy Council of Central Alabama.
- GED Classes: We offer GED classes to help prepare individuals to receive their Graduate Equivalency Diploma through Jefferson State Community College. GED classes are available Monday through Thursday, 9:00AM-1:00PM.
Child Care is provided on-site for all classes.
